Development

Here are the developing stages of my accessory, i decided to make the base of the shoe first, this allowed me to play around with my other materials to decide how the straps would be placed. As i had tried to make denim straps before and failed i need to add it somewhere within the design do symbolise the destruction of cotton farming. Around the base was a perfect place as it covered the unevenness of the foam board. The strong plastic material seen on the front of the shoe worked well, it held the shoe in place and allowed the wearer to walk with it on. However i didn’t feel as though it was enough to finalise the design. Referring back to my original hand drawn designs i had initially drawn a lot of components and made them fairly complicated. This proved to be an issue to replicated when constructing the real thing with the chosen materials. Making it simpler seemed to consume less time. I chose the multi coloured wires to symbolise the destruction of the Rana Plaza, the collapse of the building revealed the insides of architecture that you wouldn’t normally see. Adding this to the shoe would symbolise the devastation showing consumers the effects of their mindless fast fashion addictions.

Although this seemed like a great idea to translate the concept I had only managed to but one of these strips of wire, meaning I would have to use a different material for the other shoe. I didn’t like the idea of both shoes looking different, I wanted them to look equal and match, just like shoes do.

So instead I decided to use the same material for the back strap as i did for the front. This was challenging as the nature of the material meant it was hard to manipulate, but with the help of a glue gun I decided to transform them into a shape that would mould to cover the shoe. I added a little buckle to make it more life like and accessories it even further.
